Embracing Autumn: A Season for Reflection and Renewal

19 Sept – written by Katrin Kemmerzehl – Blog

As autumn arrives, the days shorten, the air cools, and the world around us transforms into shades of gold and amber.

The smell of cider, pumpkins, and fallen leaves is in the air, and the breeze is starting to hint at winter coming.

For many people, autumn brings a sense of comfort with soft jumpers, warm drinks, and the glow of candlelight. However, for others, it can also bring challenges such as low mood, fatigue, or feelings of disconnection. Those who enjoyed the hot summer days might find the transition more difficult.

No matter how you feel about the change in seasons, autumn offers a chance to pause, think, and adjust your path.

The Seasonal Shift and Mental Health

As daylight hours shorten, you might notice changes in your energy, sleep, or motivation. Spending more time indoors can sometimes feel isolating.

Autumn brings opportunities for renewal. Like trees shedding their leaves, we can also let go of what no longer serves us and create space for what we want to nurture.

This season reminds us that slowing down is not only natural, it’s necessary for growth.

Reflection, Introspection, and Growth

Autumn encourages us to turn our focus inward. Reflection helps us make sense of our experiences, while introspection invites us to observe our inner world more closely.

Both can bring self-awareness and clarity, but when they feel overwhelming, it’s important to have support.

Autumn-friendly feel-good Practices

You can use simple practices to connect with the energy of this season:

Spend time in nature. Walks among the changing leaves or moments under a quiet tree can ground you and lift your mood.

Practice mindfulness. Even a few deep breaths, or noticing the colours and sounds around you, can ease overthinking.

Keep a journal. Writing down your thoughts can provide perspective and direction.

Ask reflective questions. Consider prompts like: What brings me joy? What am I ready to let go of?

These small acts of care can build resilience, strengthen wellbeing, and help you move through the season with greater ease.

Counselling as a Gentle Support

Counselling offers a safe, confidential space to pause and reflect.

Together, the client and therapist can explore how changes in the seasons impact a person’s mood, energy, and daily routines. Some individuals may also wish to discuss habits or thoughts they would like to let go of, along with the values and priorities they want to concentrate on as the year draws to a close.

Whether you’re feeling the weight of darker days or simply wish to deepen your self-understanding, counselling can provide clarity, balance, encouragement and support.

Moving Through Autumn with Care

Like the turning leaves, we too can embrace change. This season invites us to slow down, make space for simple comforts, and prepare for what lies ahead.

With reflection, self-care, and the right support, autumn can become a time of resilience, renewal, and quiet joy.

If you would like support during this time, counseling can be a helpful option. I would be happy to walk with you as you face this period of change.

I hope this autumn brings you warmth, balance, and the courage to let go so that new beginnings can grow.
